SOAS Student Union is what happens when SOAS students unite.

The Union is not just the 3 people who sit in offices next to the common room – every student is a member, every staff member is an honorary member – together we socialise, polemicise and organise.

The Union facilitates and funds around 50 clubs and societies covering politics, sport, food, culture – in fact, almost any sort of society any student wanted to set up. Getting involved in societies not only broadens your knowledge but helps you put your (new) theory into practice.

We also provide vital services such as running the bar, the Snack Bar and the stationary shop, as well as offering essential welfare support and advice.

We have 3 elected ‘sabbaticals’ (Co-Presidents on a year out from studies) and 10 other part-time officers who work alongside our Class Representative Scheme to ensure that each student has a voice at many levels. The general direction of our campaigns and activities is decided at the Union General Meetings.

UGMs are open to all Students. Without your input the Union would be rubbish. We have a proud tradition of making a difference on local and global issues – from campaigning for Library opening hours to mobilising for the big anti-war demonstrations.

We hope you enjoy participating in, and benefiting from, the Union – we hope you help to change it. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the Union – it is here to do what you want it to do.

If it isn’t doing that – MAKE IT.
