VOLUNTARY WORK

SALUSBURY WORLD AFTER SCHOOL CLUB:
For primary school children from refugee families.
The volunteer's role: ensure safety and happiness of children, and lots of playing!
Place:
SalusburyPrimary School in Queen's Park, just over half an hour from SOAS by tube.
Times:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 3.30 - 5pm
Volunteers usually go once a week. If possible arrive by around 3.15 to help set up.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays involve activities such as arts and crafts, and Thursdays are free play time. Children from all over the world.
Around 15-25 kids usually turn up. Hectic but fun.
Holiday periods:
During the children's holidays, Salusbury World organises day trips for them to go to an adventure playground or other fun places.
Hard work but good fun!

ANCHOR PROJECT:
Youth Club for unaccompanied minors (mostly teenagers, in the UK without their parents).
Every week there are different activities, including cooking, and everyone eats dinner together at the end.
Around 30 kids usually turn up. They come from all over the world.
Volunteers help activities run smoothly, or help do the cooking with the kids, ensure the children are happy and there's lots of chatting/playing.
The kids like to play football and basketball there.
Place:
Marcus Lipton Centre in Brixton, about 10 minutes from Brixton tube.
Times:
Saturdays 3.00 - 7pm

REFUGEE COUNCIL SOCIAL EVENING:
Place:
the Refugee Council in Brixton (half an hour from SOAS by tube)Every Tuesdays 5.30-8pm:
volunteers are asked to arrive at 5pm to help set up.Around 80 kids come every week to make friends and enjoy themselves.
London can be lonely so it's important they have somewhere they are welcome and can have fun.
There are pool tables, table football, table tennis, board games etc.
Volunteers help set the room up, distribute snacks, ensure everything is running smoothly and most importantly chat with the kids, who are all very nice (mostly!)

FOOTBALL CLUB FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINORS:
We set up a small football session for the kids who come to the RC Social Evening, because so many of the kids love football but can't find a place to play.
We play in the Brixton Recreation Centre 5-6pm every Friday.

HACKNEY HOMEWORK CLUB:
Every Thursday from 3pm volunteers go and help refugee and asylum seeking students with their studies.
Often the children are learning English.
