Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Basic info:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art which is widely regarded as one of the most powerful in the world. The competitors aim to take their opponents to the ground, and use chokes, strangles and joint locks to force them to submit. It is extremely intensive physically and mentally, and the sparring and competition is full force, yet there is little risk of injury. As soon as someone taps (to show submission), the submission technique is released. This form of submission grappling has proven itself as extremely effective as it has dominated most tournaments where different martial arts are pitted against each other.

History:

Luiz Tosta started the SOAS BJJ Club years ago in the basement floor gym of the main building in Russell Square. He is a student of Mario Reis, 5 time World Champion and widely respected as one of the best BJJ fighters in the world. This means the SOAS BJJ Club is also part of Mario Reis' team, and its members are also his students. Mario came to London to teach at the club for a few weeks in November and we hope that he will come again this term.
